Hi guys, I've been wondering what the industry standard is for programs used to model and design clothing in 3D. Do you know of any?
I suppose one could do that in Blender or Maya but I'm looking for something that is specifically made for designing clothes. Like making sewing patterns from a 3D model, stitching patterns together, positioning print designs etc.
Ideally something that can do both design and decent showcasing (like a nice render of the object with some physics and lighting, texturing that looks decent or even near photorealistic). I've come across Browzwear, their programs look cool but they've been utterly useless in actually giving me anything. I've asked them how to get their program and they don't even answer, it's sad. Anyway if you know please tell me, I would appreciate it a lot. At this stage just an ok modeling program would do, in the long run I'd like to use a proper developing program as well.
Edit: you guys are the best, thank you! I think is the place to be for the first part. I've seen lots of physics animations on there, specifically the new PhysX (I think) comes with fabric modeling features that look pretty damn good and they render reasonably fast (like used in games and CGI). I've seen demos where you tear away at a hanging sheet and push it around and stuff.
I wanna ask there next but go have a look! A lot of the stuff would be in Blender but I think there's a physics suite that people use all the time that I don't know the name of. Got a lot of cool stuff like fluid dynamics and smoke particles etc. So not only can you animate but also put some fancy cinematic stuff to it if you want. Not sure how complicated it is to make and run. I'm sure if you ask nicely in a related post people would offer you the source file for you to play with.
Nothing there is super fancy on the level of say movie CGI (like proper put together scenes) but surely if you combine a couple of things you'll have a cool thing going. On the second part, yeah tell me about it. I'm a complete novice and trying to make some clothes and found that the people working in the field (at least those I could access) are old school as hell, drawing things on paper and whatnot. You'd think in this day and age 3D design tools would be utterly commonplace. For me personally I would like to use that to quickly iterate through a bunch of designs I have in mind and bring them to a good level, while being able to see a true 3D representation to make sense of it, as well as have nice renders to show to people. Rather than trying to wing it and go back and forth with my manufacturers with expensive prototypes, which would take ages and cost a lot.
If it can all be consistent, the 3D model could be translated to physical sewing and print schematics that are then used to make the physical product so it's all a streamlined process. Stick around in the thread anyways, I've found the people here very helpful and surely you'll get a proper answer!
